Prioritizing clever over clear. This is a rule that’s so easily forgotten. As someone who loves writing, I have to ask myself, does this actually make sense? I heard a good filter is like: would your grandmother get this?!

I love that filter actually!! It can be tricky to NOT try and be clever or use a play on words, but I have seen it so many times where the more "obvious" text is actually better all around!

Love this post, Nicole! Audience first, always. If they can't understand what you do or how you help, no amount clever wordplay or pretty photos will save you.

Also, as a word nerd, loved your usage of "sacrilege". 😂

Exactly!! You can still use 'clever wordplay' but make sure to have the basics down first and balance it out - it shouldn't be just about that - it needs to be about them! And haha it felt fitting😂

Totally agree.

14 years in this industry and it's the same problem, designing for themselves - not the audience.

It a lack in the brands knowledge and understanding of their audiences awareness.

I had just written down for a client: don’t try to be inspirational at the expense of being clear.
